Comet Olsen, a Golden Retriever, thought she had found the best new toy in the house — a shoe, until her mom walked in on her in this adorable Instagram video from @peachycomet22. In the video, the Golden Retriever sits on a bed with a white shoe clamped in her mouth. Unfortunately, her mom walks in on her, and Comet’s side-eye look says she knows she got caught, but she also hopes she can charm her way out of trouble.

The Golden Retriever’s owner gently calls her out in the video, asking Comet, “What do you got? Is that mama’s new shoe?” She adds, “Are you supposed to have that? That’s not yours. Give me that. Drop it,” as Comet gently listens and drops the shoe right away. The owner praises the dog, saying, “Good girl,” reminding her, “This is mama’s.” 

You might think that the problem is there, but not for long. After the shoe returns to its rightful owner, Comet ends up on the floor near the bed, with the sneaker in her mouth again. Her owner catches the robbery and asks, “What do you think you’re doing, Missy? That’s mama’s new shoe.” The video’s caption says, “Walked away for one minute ?” and that’s all it took for Coment to attempt the theft again.

Dogs often go for shoes because they carry a strong, comforting scent from their person. Besides, grabbing something like a sneaker can work as a guaranteed way to start an interaction, or a way to garner attention, even if the game lasts only a few seconds before the proprietor takes the item away.

Viewers loved the Golden‘s expression, especially once she realized the owner had spotted her. People wrote versions of, “Those eyes!! I can’t!” and “Her face of ‘I thought this was mine,’” while others joked that Comet had a point, too, suggesting she wanted “walkies time” or simply approved of mom’s new shoes.

Comet may not get to keep the sneaker, but she definitely won the moment.
